Save Time With Laser Hair Removal

Unwanted hair can be a costly and time-consuming nuisance, especially for those who have dark body hair, or hair that grows back quickly. Thanks to advancements in laser technology, body hair can be effectively reduced, dramatically downsizing the time and money spent on hair removal. Laser hair removal can be done on the upper lip, cheeks, chin, neck, breasts, stomach, arms, shoulders, bikini area, legs, and back.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

During a laser hair removal treatment, a powerful laser emits light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The light converts to heat energy that inhibits the hair follicle from producing hair at the same rate and thickness as before. While laser hair removal does not eliminate hair completely, it makes the hair finer, lighter, and sparser. After a series of regularly scheduled sessions, the need for hair removal is significantly minimized. At Robb Facial Plastic Surgery, we use FDA-approved Candela Gentlemax Pro, the gold standard for laser hair removal among plastic surgeons and dermatologists.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

Because laser technology has improved significantly, laser hair removal today is not nearly as uncomfortable as it was in the past.

In fact, the laser technology we use in our deluxe medical spa at Robb Facial Plastic Surgery cools the skin surface during treatment to minimize discomfort.

What is recovery like after laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a no-downtime procedure, and many patients return to normal activities immediately after treatment. Some patients may experience redness after treatment, though this should subside in about an hour or so. Though normal work and social activities can be resumed, patients should avoid strenuous activity for at least a day.

Prep Before Your Treatment

Laser hair removal does require preparation before a session. Our dedicated care team will provide you with instructions, but below are guidelines we often suggest:

  • Avoid tanning for 2 months and no sun exposure for 2 weeks prior
  • Avoid waxing, tweezing, or depilatory use for 6 weeks
  • Avoid irritants such as products containing glycolic acid or Retin-A in the area for 5-7 days
  • No Accutane for 6 months prior to treatment
  • Shave the desired treatment area the night before laser treatment.
  • No deodorant, creams, oils, perfumes, etc. on treatment area prior to a session
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of treatment, so as not to irritate the treated area

What Does Aftercare Look Like?

After a laser hair removal session, the areas treated may be red for some patients. This will generally fade within 2-3 days. Minor crusting or scabbing of the treated area can occur; patients should not rub or pick scabs. Below are some aftercare directives. Our care team will also provide you with instructions after your session.

  • The treated area can be washed normally with mild soap and water, gently washing with your fingertips and not a washcloth or other abrasive item
  • Cover the treated area with a sunscreen of SPF30 or higher and avoid sun exposure to the treated area for 2 weeks.
  • Avoid products with glycolic acid or Retin-A in the area for 5-7 days
  • Apply an antibacterial ointment to the treated area
  • Apply 1% hydrocortisone or Aloe Vera to the treated area if redness occurs
  • No exercise until perifollicular edema (red bumps) resolves
  • No jacuzzi, sauna, or steam baths until the skin is back to normal

What Results Can I Expect?

Smooth skin and noticeably thinner, lighter hair will result after a series of laser hair removal sessions. You’ll spend much less time shaving or waxing, and when you do need to tend to your body hair, it will be faster and less frequent.

Hair remaining in the follicle will typically extrude within 1-2 weeks after treatment. This will look like growth but is simply the body’s way of eliminating the hair from the injured follicle. On the third-day post-treatment, you may shave or gently wash the area to help loosen hair that is still embedded in the follicles.
