Get Smoother, Blemish Free Skin

Scars are typically unwanted blemishes caused by trauma, an existing medical condition, or surgery. For those with significant scarring, it may seem impossible to envision a future with clear, beautiful skin. Self-consciousness about one’s skin can cause one to avoid social situations and withdraw from life. Luckily, there is a way to significantly reduce the appearance of scars.

What Is Scar Revision?

Scar revision is a surgical procedure that eliminates or greatly reduces the appearance of scars on the face or body by gradually making them thinner or reorienting placement. Depending on the extent of the scar revision needed, the surgery is performed with local anesthesia while awake, or under sedation for patient comfort. Scar revision surgery is often coupled with laser treatments and chemical peels to provide as much scar erasure as possible.

What Causes Scars?

The formation of scar tissue takes place as the skin heals after an injury or wound. The amount of scarring largely depends on many factors, such as:

  • Age
  • Skin tone and pigmentation; genetics
  • The depth and location of the wound
  • The cause of the scar
  • Previous substandard treatment of the scarred tissue
  • The overall health of the skin

When Should You Have Scar Revision Surgery?

Indications for this surgery vary depending on the extent of the scars. In general, after an injury, the skin should have approximately 3 months to settle and heal. Revisions performed prior to this time can risk reopening the previous wound. Ideally, scar revision is scheduled 12 months after the injury. Dr. Robb will perform a comprehensive assessment of your skin during your consultation to help decide if scar revision is appropriate for you.

Other Methods Of Scar Revision

There are numerous techniques available to remove scars. Lasers can smooth out the scar and stimulate collagen production to replace scar tissue with healthy tissue. Silicone therapy with cream or skin strips can be used with scar massages and pressure therapy to soften the surface of the skin.

Scars can also be successfully reduced or eliminated with dermabrasion. This involves removing surface skin layers with a special tool and making space for new skin growth. For many patients, a combination of surgical and non-surgical methods is needed for optimal outcomes.

What Is Recovery Like After Scar Revision Surgery?

Most patients can return to normal activities after the procedure, though it is likely that bruising and swelling will occur. This usually subsides in 1-2 weeks. Dr. Robb will dress the area with special anti-tension bandages to reduce pressure on the skin and prevent further scarring. As the area heals, discoloration is normal. With time, discoloration fades and becomes unnoticeable. Dr. Robb will monitor your healing process to ensure recovery goes well.
