Cosmetic Surgery Today
15.9 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States in 2015 alone. Facial cosmetic procedures continue to increase at drastic rates. This is largely due to the increase in safety as well as the increased awareness of signs of aging as we are engulfed with photos in social media. People are living longer and more meaningful lives and want to look as good as they feel.
Americans today are more focused on eating right, staying healthy, and pay more attention to our outward appearance than in decades past.
Beauty has a rich history of intrigue. Aristotle and Socrates argued about what beauty is and how one can obtain this. Through many years of study, we believe we know more about what human beauty is than ever before. In addition, the techniques have advanced so far that obtaining beauty is easier, less invasive, and more obtainable than ever before.
Several studies have investigated the theory that when people look better, they actually become healthier and the results are striking. According to a study performed in Oxford England looking at over 600 patients they concluded that “aesthetic surgery led to health gains in the aspects of social, psychological, and physical functioning.(1)” This conclusion is supported by another study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery that concluded that “cosmetic surgery produces positive post-operative psychological effect measurable by quality of life outcomes: patients are more self confident, more satisfied with their appearance and they demonstrate increased psychological well being profiles after surgery. Subjects reported positive changes in their social lives, sex lives, and interpersonal relationships, while enjoying more leisure activities.” The study also concluded that “cosmetic patients have significantly lower depression scores after surgery.”(2)
