IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or Photofacial
About our signature photofacial
As we age, we’re increasing the amount of radiation that we’re exposed to from the sun’s energy. Our skin absorbs this and over time, age spots, wrinkles, and other irregularities arise on the surface of the skin. These spots commonly arise of the face, upper chest, arms, and hands. These are commonly referred to as moles, sunspots, freckles, age spots or birthmarks.
Treatment of these lesions relies on physics. Using the state-of-the-art laser and light therapy, these spots are able to be painlessly removed. The dark colored lesions absorb the light energy more than the surrounding skin. The energy “cooks” the spot and causes it to break up and fall off your skin.
7-10 days after the treatment, the areas of pigment with develop a fine scab and flake off, allowing only the pure and clear skin behind. Most of these targeted lesions can be removed in between 2-3 treatments although sometimes more treatments may be required.
What can I expect during a treatment?
The patient is made comfortable, the laser is focused on the areas to be treated. Most treatments are completely painless and last 20-30 minutes. There is no recovery, downtime or tell-tale signs of treatment. Patients are able to do this over their lunch break and return to work. Occasionally, when required, numbing medication can be applied to the skin for sensitive areas. Patients can wear make up immediately after treatment.
Are there special skin care products that can improve outcomes and healing?
Our skin specialist may recommend a specialized skin care regimen to give your skin the nutrients and growth factors that it needs. This is discussed and customized on a patient-by-patient basis. We do recommend stopping Retinoic Acid products several days prior to the procedure.
Avoiding the sun and the outdoors is important in the 2 weeks prior to the procedure and the 1-2 weeks after the procedure. During this treatment, we specifically target the amount of treatment that the skin needs, sunlight can alter that amount of energy and make it potentially higher than it should be which can cause burns or blisters.
Sunscreen is extremely important in the before care as well as after the procedure. Our office endorses extremely high quality medical grade sunscreen.
Robb Facial Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa also is an official retailor for several medical grade skin care products that can speed up the healing process of laser based procedures- These are often recommended depending on skin type and goals.
Is the treatment safe?
Yes it is. These treatments have been FDA approved for the last 20 years. They are safe, well tolerated, and an accepted tool to skin rejuvenation and health. This treatment is recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology. The potential side effects of pigmentation changes or scarring is extremely rare.
How much does it cost?
Charges are based upon the size of the area to be treated and the number of sessions required. Most pigmented lesions can be treated in 2-3 sessions and costs start at $200-300 per session for the whole face or the chest, but less if individual lesions are being treated. Fractioned CO2 removes sun damage in one treatment. Robb Facial Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa also offers Care Credit Patient Payment plans.
